戰國時，秦國三公主弄玉不慕繁華，選婿以擅吹笙者為尚。

某日，玉在華山遇一美男子，她以為他是神仙，約他在山寺再見。恰巧那天藩王亦邀弄到華山寺，華山琴者取悅她，誰料弄玉識破他是假琴童之手彈琴
，而所謂神仙其實便是琴童蕭史。

弄玉興奮莫名，囑史上朝應試，史奏一曲竟引來百鳥朝鳳。弄玉愛才，不顧太后反對，寧捨公主之位也要嫁史。秦王無奈，準她每年返朝一次相聚。

昔之金枝玉葉從此生活貧苦。一年後，弄玉夫婦返朝，太后設計強行拆散兩人。此時晉國派人到來尋覓世子，秦王得知史為晉國失蹤多年之世子，即備龍鳳雕車兩輪，送史和玉返晉國。
